IMCAS Delegation Visits Fiocruz Bahia to Advance Collaboration on Tropical Microbiology, Diagnostics, Drugs, and Vaccines


    A high-level delegation from the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS) on May 30, 2026, Salvador, Brazil. Delegation visited the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) Bahia Center in Salvador today. The visit marks a significant step toward deepening scientific cooperation between China and Brazil in the field of infectious diseases.

    The IMCAS delegation included Deputy Director Tong Zhou of the Strategy Office, Executive Director Dr. Liang Wang, and Dr. Likui Wang, Secretary-General of CEEID. During the visit, both sides delivered thematic presentations on their latest research and engaged in in-depth discussions on potential joint efforts in tropical microbiology, diagnostics, drug development, and vaccine research.

    The Brazilian side was represented by a multidisciplinary team of leading researchers from Fiocruz Bahia, including:Washington Luís*– Vice Director for Research and Innovation. Cláudia Brodskyn– Coordinator for Internationalization; Researcher in Neglected Diseases, with a focus on Leishmaniasis.-Camila Indiani de Oliveira–Human Parasitic Protozoology, emphasizing Leishmaniasis and parasite–host–vector interactions. Geraldo Gileno de Sá Oliveira– Pathology, specializing in minimally invasive autopsies, immunoregulation, and Leishmaniasis diagnosis.ila Araújo– Clinical trial projects.Luciano Kalabric Silva– Molecular Biology, with expertise in viral hepatitis diagnostics and population genetics.Milena Botelho Pereira Soares– Immunopharmacology and Regenerative Medicine, focusing on advanced stem cell therapies. Sérgio Arruda– Area of expertise to be confirmed. Viviane Boaventura – Immunopathology of infectious diseases, including vector-borne diseases.

    The discussions highlighted the shared research interests between IMCAS and Fiocruz in tackling tropical and neglected diseases, leveraging cutting-edge molecular diagnostics, and exploring innovative therapeutic and vaccine platforms. Both parties agreed to explore formal mechanisms for future collaboration, including joint research projects, scientist exchange programs, and capacity-building initiatives. This visit represents a vital opportunity to bridge our two institutions’ expertise in tropical medicine and infectious disease research, we look forward to building a sustainable partnership that translates scientific innovation into tangible health benefits for both nations.

    Vice Director Washington Luís of Fiocruz Bahia echoed the sentiment, noting that the synergies identified during today’s meeting lay a solid foundation for long-term China-Brazil cooperation in global health.Further follow-up meetings and a potential memorandum of understanding are expected to be discussed in the coming months.
