Academician George Fu Gao lead a delegation visit to Rwanda
From August 5 to 9, 2024, Academician George Fu Gao of the Chinese Academy of Sciences led a delegation to visit Rwanda at the invitation of the Ministry of Health of Rwanda and the University for Global Health Equity.

During the visit, the delegation participated in a workshop on the theme "Global Health Partnerships: Medical Education, Research and Innovation." The objective of the workshop was to expand the boundaries of cooperation between the two sides in a number of key areas through the exchange of ideas and wisdom. The workshop was attended by the following individuals: Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, Minister of Health of Rwanda; Mr. Gaspered Twagirayezu, Minister of Education of Rwanda; Mr. Zhiqiang Gao, Counselor of Chinese Embassy in Rwanda; Dr. Didas Kayihura, Acting Vice Chancellor of University of Rwanda; and Dr. Jim Yong Kim, President of University for Global Health Equity, former President of the World Bank.

At the workshop, President Jim Yong Kim delivered a speech in which he explained the background and profound significance of the event. Subsequently, Academician George Fu Gao analyzed the current challenges and opportunities of global health with the theme of "Global Health and Universal Health Coverage." He emphasized the urgent need and significance of strengthening international cooperation and accelerating the realization of universal health coverage in the context of globalization. During the panel discussion, Academician George Fu Gao, Minister Sabin Nsanzimana, and President Jim Yong Kim discussed the topic of "Global Health Partnerships: Present and Future. "Citing the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province, China, as a case study, Academician George Fu Gao highlighted the role of Ms. Peng Liyuan, WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Tuberculosis and HIV /AIDS, and with the extensive collaboration of the international community, the Liangshan Prefecture has made remarkable progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS. This not only demonstrates the power of cross-border cooperation, but also sets an example for global public health. Dean Wu Xifeng of Zhejiang University School of Public Health presented on the theme of "Digital Intelligence for a New Journey in Health Science." The focus of his presentation was on the cutting-edge applications and broad prospects of big data in public health, medical research, and clinical treatment. He also shared his vision for the future development of big data in the African region. Mr. Jiang Jun, Deputy Director of the Department of Cardiology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine (ZUSM), shared the valuable experience and practical achievements of ZUSM in solving clinical problems and promoting scientific research and innovation under the title of "Execution and Exploration: Scientific Research to Meet Unmet Clinical Needs". This provided a wealth of inspirations and thoughts on the future cooperation between the two sides in teaching and scientific research.
The delegation also visited the University of Rwanda and the University for Global Health Equity. They had in-person, friendly conversations with teachers and students. These conversations helped everyone better understand each other and formed a solid foundation for future collaborations in education, scientific research, and health talent development.
During the visit to Rwanda, President Kagame of Rwanda met with Academician George Fu Gao, Dean Wu Xifeng and Director Jiang Jun, along with their accompanying delegation. The meeting was productive, and the participants expressed their desire to collaborate more closely in the future on health-related projects.
