Nigeria Health Ministry Delegation Visits the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences to Deepen Global Health Cooperation
A high-level delegation from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of Nigeria, led by Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, visited the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS) on November 2, 2025. The delegation consisted of five members and aimed to strengthen collaboration in global health, biotechnology, and infectious disease research between China and Nigeria.
Academician George F. Gao, Director of CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Emerging Infectious Disease(CEEID), warmly welcomed the delegation. In his remarks, Prof. Gao emphasized the importance of strengthening international cooperation in public health science and technology. He expressed hope to work closely with Nigerian institutions to cultivate more outstanding scientific talents and jointly advance health innovation across the African continent.
In his address, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate highlighted Nigeria’s strong commitment to global health and biomedical development. He noted that enhanced cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Sciences would contribute to the coordinated development of health sciences, the sharing of biopharmaceutical innovations, and the provision of public health products to African countries.
Prof. Qihui Wang, Deputy Director-General of IMCAS, presented an overview of the Institute’s major research areas, including microbial resources, biotechnology, and pathogen and immunology research, as well as recent scientific initiatives under the Belt and Road framework. She expressed the Institute’s readiness to establish long-term, sustainable partnerships with Nigeria in the fields of global health and biomedicine.
Following the meeting, the Nigerian delegation toured IMCAS laboratories and the Olympic Village Science and Technology Park, gaining deeper insight into China’s advancements in microbiological research and innovation platforms.This visit marks an important step in promoting China–Nigeria collaboration in global health, fostering joint research, talent training, and technological innovation to address shared public health challenges.
